Tanya Egerton, founder of the Remote OpShop Project, is the 2024 AgriFutures Rural Woman of the Year. This award is an important platform to acknowledge and support the critical role women play in rural and regional businesses, industries and communities.
Tanya won the award for her innovative project empowering Northern Territory women in remote Indigenous communities by providing access to affordable clothing and household goods. Each op shop is independently run by local women. The funds raised are then reinvested into projects that enhance community health and well-being. This model promotes independence, leadership and sustainability.
Tanya’s goal is to expand this initiative Remote OpShop Project across Northern Territory, providing essential goods and economic opportunities to First Nations communities while addressing waste.
Victorian resident paediatric critical care nurse, Grace Larson, was awarded the National Runner Up title for The Sisterhood Project. This program addresses health disadvantages faced by children living in rural communities.
