The Central Arnhem Road project aimed to assess the potential economic and social benefits of upgrading the road from Katherine to Nhulunbuy, as well as providing an assessment of the road corridor. Project partners included the Northern Territory Department of Transport and GHD.

The project responded to the need for Nhulunbuy to transition following the closure of the Rio Tinto alumina refinery.

RDA NT consulted with community stakeholders who identified this as the priority project for the region. The Central Arnhem Road is the only access road to Nhulunbuy and the key to opening the region up for new economic activity.

The report provides robust qualitative information to make up for a major deficit of quantitative data.
