Seeing New Investment Fund
The Mimal Land Management area, located at the geographic center of Arnhem Land and approximately 250km east of Katherine, spans nearly as large an area as Kakadu National Park. The main communities and homelands within this area include Bulman, Weemol, and Barrapunta (Emu Springs). Around 300 people reside in Bulman and Weemol. The Mimal Rangers, based at Weemol near Bulman, manage over 600,000 hectares of rugged central Arnhem Land.
The Mimal Rangers play a crucial role in the region’s success, collaborating with landowners, outstation people, and the community. Their work includes controlled burning, wildfire management, endangered species monitoring, weed and feral animal control, and the recording and protection of special sites. The ranger program provides vital income in remote areas, contributing to the local economy and offering jobs that respect and recognise traditional knowledge.
Despite supporting over 60 staff across 80 projects, the current facilities of the Mimal ranger base are inadequate. Their goal is to develop purpose-built accommodations, training, and operational facilities that will serve the region for decades. Utilising local labor and materials, the new ranger base is a smart investment in remote Australia, ensuring immediate and future job creation.
With a $50,000 grant from the Seeding New Investment Fund, the project has progressed with architectural drawings, engineering designs, and Quantity Surveyor work. This project aims to deliver a plan for a staged rollout and a fully funded build. The improved ranger base will support existing employment and activities while enabling the growth of this established ranger program into the future.
