Seeing New Investment Fund
This projects core objective is to facilitate the implementation of circular economy principles within remote indigenous communities. Its primary focus is to foster local indigenous enterprise and employment opportunities while effectively diverting waste from landfill sites.
Covering a vast expanse of 50,000km², the West Arnhem Region boasts pristine natural environments, including the iconic Kakadu National Park. As local government representative for this region, the Council is committed to preserving the landscape for future generations, while fostering economic opportunities for those living in the region.
Currently, the region operates five remote landfill sites with limited recycling options due to logistical challenges. This project proposes the establishment of Recycling Hubs within these communities, offering reusables shops, sorting facilities, cash for containers workshops, plastics collectives, and organic waste processing units. Additionally, it aims to streamline the collection and processing of recyclables, reducing landfill waste significantly.
Beyond local impact, this initiative will provide a blueprint for adaptation and use across other remote communities nationwide and globally. With a $48,060.00 grant received from the Seeding New Investment Fund, West Arnhem Regional Council will develop a comprehensive Business Plan that is not only funding-ready but also scalable and adaptable to diverse remote settings.
